Transport, preserve, and examine stool specimens for enteric pathogens using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Fecal Transport Three-Vial Sets containing Cary-Blair with Indicator/SAF Fixative/Empty Vials. The Cary-Blair formulation has a low nutrient content, a low oxidation-reduction potential, and a high pH and recovers Shigella and Salmonella1. Luechtefeld et al. modified this medium and reduced agar content2,3 to recover Campylobacter spp. It is also recommended for the transport of Yersinia species and Vibrio parahaemolyticus4,5.Cary Blair Transport Medium with Indicator is an isotonic and non-nutritive medium and does not contain a fermentable carbohydrate. SAF (Sodium acetate-acetic acid-formalin) Fixative is a multipurpose medium used for preservation of intestinal parasites6. Remel™ Fecal Transport Three-Vial Sets are packaged in zip seal bags with multilingual instructions. Caps are color coded to match industry standard colors and have an attached spork.Broad range with long shelf lifeIndustry standard color-coded caps and labelsEasy to use spork cap for safe collectionConvenient packaging, including bulk kitsMultilingual patient collection instructionsEmpty vial is used for test procedures not compatible with fecal preservativesCary-Blair with indicator contains 0.16% agar and is for preservation and recovery of enteric bacterial pathogensSAF fixative provides preservation, concentration and permanent staining of intestinal parasitesCary-Blair with indicator medium contains sodium thioglycolate which is added to impede oxidation. Disodium phosphate is incorporated in the medium to act as a buffering agent, that prevents overgrowth of Escherichia coli and Enterobacter species. The relatively high pH due to acid formation minimizes the destruction of bacteria. Phenol red is a pH indicator which is added to demonstrate acidic shifts that can affect the viability of some enteric pathogens.SAF Fixative can be used in multiple procedures such as wet mount examination, concentration method, and permanent stained smears7,8. SAF is a safer than Schaudinn’s fixative9 as it does not contain mercuric chloride. Microscope slides used to prepare permanent stains should be coated with albumin before application of stool sample that has been preserved in SAF Fixative10.Not all products are available for sale in all territories.
